Cocco fresco e bombolone

Umbrellone

Two more weeks, and then it’s off to Tuscany, for a three weeks, well-deserved holiday (at least that’s what I think). We (that is me, my wife and my two lovely, blond, blue-eyed daughters) are going to the northern part of Tuscany, between the Versilian coast and Lucca (for the specialist amongst you, near to Pescaglia and the Apuanian alps). Familiar territority for me, since I’ve been going there for ten years now.

Some days will have to be on the beach, which is not too bad on the Versilian coast. You are obliged to pay for some square meters of space and an umbrellone, a big sunshade, and one or two deckchairs. The nice thing though, is that all this nasty holiday stuff comes with a bar. An Italian bar, mind you, which means -usually- good food and wine. Over the years I’ve studied several of them, and finally came up with the definitive one. The choice was entirely based on the quality of the menu, which comprises excellent spaghetti alle vongole and panzanella. And then you have the pizette and gelati for the children.

Even on the beach, food will not let you out of sight: after all, this is Italy. So you have the beach vendors of cocco fresco, pieces of coconut in a bucket filled with water and bombolone, elsewhere known as Berliner or krapfen.

Now this might be perfect on a Sunday morning with a cappuccino, but on a sun-drenched beach?, no thanks. I will be after some specialities again, like potato bread and zuppa co’nicchi alla viareggina.  Subscribe to the feed and Twitter, so you won’t miss anything!

Ciao, e buone vacanze!
